Facade Study for a Public Building

Here is a short overview of the main milestones in my process of developing a conceptual, competition-like facade design, starting with a hand drawn sketch, all the way to the rendering.

In step one, the ideas are being tested and quickly drafted by hand. I love the hand drawn sketches for their spontaneity, and because they make me actively deliberate on the main question in any design process: what do I want from this?

This is basically where all of the main decisions, are being made. The other steps are meant to test the initial idea out, to deepen it and push it forward. If the concept fails, which is the case more often than not, then there is often a new sketch, and everything starts all over again.

The next step is a reality check in form of 2d CAD drawing. This is where most of the issues regarding the norms, construction and functionality come into light. A proper analysis also entails a 2d facade section in 1:20

A simple 3d model comes as the next test and an opportunity for further development. This is also where I test the facade plasticity against the context.

The last step is a rendered image.
